Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially laid the cornerstone for the Bishoftu International Airport, marking the physical start of Africa’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure project to date. Located in Abusera, near the town of Bishoftu—approximately 40 kilometers southeast of the capital—the new hub is designed to resolve the looming capacity constraints at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport.

While Bole currently manages roughly 25 million passengers per year, it is rapidly approaching saturation. The new facility is engineered to handle an initial 60 million passengers in its first phase, slated for completion by 2029. This capacity will eventually scale to a massive 110 million upon full completion, making it the largest airport on the African continent and a major rival to global transit hubs like Dubai and Istanbul.

The project is a central pillar of Ethiopia’s "Vision 2035" and aligns with the African Union's "African Single Air Transport Market" (SAATM) initiative. Lower altitudes mean denser air, which allows aircraft to take off with full fuel and cargo loads without the weight restrictions often faced at Bole. This shift will enable more efficient, non-stop long-haul flights to distant markets like North America and East Asia, reinforcing Ethiopia's competitive edge in the global sky.

Financial momentum for the $12.5 billion endeavor is robust. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is serving as the Mandate Lead Arranger to mobilize nearly $8.7 billion in loans, with $500 million already pledged. Ethiopian Airlines itself is contributing 30% of the equity, showcasing the strength of a carrier that remained profitable even through the global pandemic. Additional interest has been signaled by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

The construction is moving in rapid phases, with $610 million already committed to massive earthworks. These works involve the relocation of local farming communities to modern, designated resettlement sites—a process the government says is essential for the 35-square-kilometer footprint of the project. The main engineering and terminal construction (EPC) contracts are expected to be awarded by August 2026, with major structural work following shortly after.

Beyond the runways, the "Mega Airport City" concept will redefine the regional hospitality and tourism landscape. The design, led by a consortium including Dar Al-Handasah, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Pascall+Watson, features a 1.1 million square meter terminal. The plan incorporates elements of Ethiopian heritage into a high-tech, sustainable structure designed to be "people-centric" and intuitive for the millions of transit passengers expected to pass through annually.

This "aerotropolis" will house over 100,000 square meters of retail space, luxury hotels, and business centers. For the hospitality sector, this is a massive opportunity; the goal is to transform transit travelers into stopover tourists. By offering world-class amenities and "layover tours" within the airport city, Ethiopia hopes to capture a larger share of the global tourism market, boosting the national GDP and creating tens of thousands of local jobs.

Logistics will also see a revolution. The airport is set to become one of the largest cargo hubs in the world, with facilities designed to handle 3.73 million tons of freight per year. This will be critical for Ethiopia’s major exports, such as coffee and flowers, and will support the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by streamlining the movement of goods across the region through advanced cold-chain and digital tracking systems.

To ensure the new hub remains accessible, the government is developing a 38-kilometer high-speed railway and a multi-lane expressway connecting Bishoftu to Addis Ababa. The railway, capable of speeds up to 200 kph (124 mph), will ensure that travelers can reach the heart of the capital in under 20 minutes. This seamless connectivity is designed to integrate the airport into the broader urban and commercial network of the region.

As the project moves toward its 2030 operational target, Bole International Airport will not be abandoned but will instead transition into a specialized hub for domestic and regional services. The successful launch of the Bishoftu project stands as a bold statement of Ethiopia’s ambition.
