The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has confirmed that Addis Ababa will serve as the host city for the 2026 edition of the Focus Africa Conference. Scheduled for April 29–30 and hosted by Ethiopian Airlines, the summit arrives at a critical juncture as African aviation experiences a significant post-pandemic resurgence, with Ethiopia leading the way as a strategic continental hub.

Under the theme "Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity, and Operational Efficiency in Africa," the conference is expected to draw over 300 aviation leaders, policymakers, and innovators. The agenda focuses on moving beyond theoretical potential to address the practical barriers that have historically limited Africa’s share of global air traffic, including fragmented regulations, high infrastructure charges, and persistent safety oversight challenges.

IATA’s Focus Africa initiative, launched originally in Addis Ababa in 2023, has already recorded several technical milestones. Since its inception, the program has supported the rollout of Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems in 12 African nations and introduced new financial settlement operations in markets like Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Ghana.

Kamil Alawadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, noted that while the demand to support a 3–4% annual growth rate exists, structural barriers remain. "Aviation has the potential to do much more to enable Africa’s economic and social development," Alawadhi stated. He emphasized that the upcoming conference would prioritize reducing costs and harmonizing regulations to turn that potential into a sustainable reality.

The selection of Addis Ababa reinforces Ethiopia’s position as a diplomatic and transportation nexus. Recent data highlights the immense economic weight of the sector locally; a recent IATA report indicates that aviation supports over 527,000 jobs in Ethiopia and contributes approximately $2 billion to the national GDP.

The conference will feature a high-profile lineup of speakers, including Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics and Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. Discussions are expected to cover the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and the expansion of intra-African routes, which are seen as essential for boosting trade and tourism across the continent.

A primary focus of the 2026 summit will be the modernization of settlement systems and digital payment solutions. IATA has recently introduced "Easy Pay" in several African markets to assist agents and improve airline cash flow in regions where payment infrastructure has historically been a bottleneck. Stakeholders will take stock of these advancements while identifying the next steps for digitalizing the distribution chain.

As the industry faces rising fuel costs and global geopolitical uncertainties, the Addis Ababa gathering represents a coordinated effort to build a more resilient African aviation ecosystem. By fostering public-private dialogue, IATA and its partners aim to ensure that African carriers can compete effectively on the global stage while providing more affordable and reliable connectivity for the continent’s citizens.
