Ethiopia has taken a major step in its cultural and creative journey with the inauguration of a world-class Children and Youth Theatre Complex in Addis Ababa. The facility was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, who hailed the project as a milestone in nurturing the next generation of artists and storytellers.

Temesgen emphasized that the arts are not simply entertainment but a powerful medium for shaping values, advancing civilization, and reinforcing the country’s vision of prosperity. The new theatre complex is designed to meet international standards and includes a main theatre with 1,200 seats, two cinema halls, and expansive areas dedicated to training, rehearsals, and backstage production. Spread across two 14-story buildings, the complex has been described as one of the most ambitious cultural infrastructure projects in the country. Officials highlighted that the space will serve not only as a venue for performances but also as a training ground to elevate Ethiopia’s place in the global arts community.

In his remarks, Temesgen called on the public, especially the youth, to seize the opportunities provided by the complex. He urged young Ethiopians to use the platform to strengthen unity, promote shared values, and project Ethiopia’s image on the world stage. Addis Ababa’s mayor, Adanech Abiebie, also underlined the city’s investment in cultural infrastructure. She noted that in recent years, Addis Ababa has renovated historic theatres, built nine new venues, and established over 100 plazas and dozens of amphitheaters. These efforts, she said, ensure that culture is not confined to formal institutions but is woven into the daily lives of citizens across the city.
