Nairobi, Kenya — In a significant move to elevate the status of tour guides in East Africa, the inaugural East Africa Tour Guide Conference was held in Nairobi under the theme “Storytellers of Africa: Tour Guides in Africa’s Tourism Economy.” The event brought together guides, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and training institutions to address the often-overlooked role of guides in shaping visitor experiences.

Felix Migoya, Chairman of the East Africa Tour Guides and Drivers Association (EATGDA), emphasized the multifaceted role of guides, stating, “We are more than just guides – we are cultural ambassadors, wildlife educators, conservation champions, and frontline hosts. Yet our voices are often the last to be heard.”

A central topic of discussion was the lack of a cohesive policy framework defining, training, and certifying tour guides. Kennedy Kaunda, Group CEO of EATGDA, highlighted the challenges posed by the absence of strong regulatory frameworks, allowing unqualified individuals to enter the market. He called for policies that clearly define the role of a guide, coupled with enforcement and regular training.

The conference also addressed concerns about declining tourist arrivals during the low season. Daniel Mbugua, Chairman of the Tour Operator Society of Kenya, pointed out that high park fees, particularly the recent increase in the Maasai Mara, make Kenya less competitive compared to neighboring countries like Tanzania. He noted, “We’re seeing tourists spend just two or three days in Kenya before moving on to spend two weeks in Tanzania. That’s not sustainable. We must offer value and depth that encourages travelers to stay.”

EATGDA’s Corporate Affairs Representative, Jeff Murira, echoed similar concerns, highlighting the negative impact of poor payment systems in parks and inconsistent support from tourism authorities. He stated, “Last year was tough and things haven’t improved. Tour guides are dealing with low bookings, poor digital platforms, and rising operational costs. We want the government to hear our stories – we’re the ones interacting with tourists daily.”

The summit concluded with a call for greater collaboration between the government and tour guides in national tourism planning, resource allocation, and marketing strategies. Delegates emphasized the need for inclusive practices to support the livelihoods of those who are integral to the tourism experience.

As East Africa continues to position itself as a premier tourism destination, the voices of tour guides are increasingly recognized as essential to the region's sustainable growth and success.
