At the 57th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission held in March 2026, UN Tourism introduced a series of advances aimed at closing this gap and strengthening how tourism is integrated within global economic measurement systems.

The initiative reflects the increasing urgency for internationally consistent, reliable, and sustainability‑linked data as governments, development institutions, and private‑sector actors navigate shifting tourism demand patterns. UN Tourism Secretary‑General Shaikha Al Nuwais emphasized that tourism deserves data systems reflective of its scale and economic importance. The Commission also recognized the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST), previously endorsed by the UN General Assembly as the first global statistical model designed to measure tourism’s economic, environmental, and social impacts in a unified manner—moving beyond traditional GDP‑focused approaches.

As tourism continues to expand across emerging and mature destinations alike, the need to connect business‑level sustainability reporting with national and international statistical systems has become increasingly clear. Recognizing this, UN Tourism convened a high‑level side event titled “Bridging Macro and Micro Data in Sustainability: The Case of Tourism and the ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses.” Held on March 4 at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the session explored how tourism companies’ ESG reporting can be aligned with globally agreed statistical standards to improve comparability and reduce reporting fragmentation. The event was organized in collaboration with the UN Committee of Experts on Business and Trade Statistics, and supported by Statistics Netherlands, easyJet holidays, and Booking.com.

By linking sustainability data at both the macro and micro levels, UN Tourism aims to equip governments with clearer insights into sector performance while helping businesses—especially small and medium‑sized enterprises—navigate increasingly complex reporting requirements. The ultimate objective is to build a more coherent global tourism data ecosystem in which information from hotels, airlines, tour operators, and digital platforms can be meaningfully integrated within official national accounts and sustainability frameworks.

These advancements arrive at a pivotal moment for global tourism recovery and transformation.
