In 1991, she founded Roots & Shoots, a youth-led environmental education program that began in Tanzania and soon spread across the continent and the globe. Its mission was simple: empower young people to create positive change in their communities for animals, people, and the environment.

Roots & Shoots ignited a new generation of African environmental leaders. In schools from Nairobi to Kigali, from Lagos to Addis Ababa, students took up projects to clean up rivers, plant trees, and advocate for animal welfare. Goodall personally visited many of these communities, listening, encouraging, and reminding young people that their voices mattered.

Yet, Africa always remained central to her mission. She returned regularly to Gombe, her spiritual home, and remained deeply involved in forest conservation across the continent. She supported efforts to protect great ape habitats, advocated for better policies at international forums, and urged African leaders to integrate environmental priorities into national development agendas.

She was also a fierce opponent of wildlife trafficking, raising awareness about the illegal pet trade and the bushmeat crisis. Her voice, soft but unwavering, brought global attention to the ethical and ecological consequences of treating animals as commodities.

Even in her later years, she maintained a punishing travel schedule, giving lectures, meeting with presidents and grassroots organizers alike. Her message that every individual has a role to play, remained consistent, and her moral clarity never wavered.

As news of her death spread, tributes poured in from across the African continent. In Tanzania, where her journey began, the government issued a statement honoring her lifelong contributions to science and conservation. In Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, conservation groups held memorial events and vowed to carry on her work.

Her legacy was not just about what she accomplished, but about the doors she opened — for women in science, for ethical wildlife research, for African-led conservation, and for inclusive environmental justice.

Her image, standing barefoot in the forest, clipboard in hand, gently observing, has become iconic. But it is the less visible moments that speak most powerfully: the hundreds of young Africans she inspired, the chimpanzees she helped rescue and rehabilitate, the forests she helped protect through policy and persuasion.

Jane Goodall’s death comes at a time when conservation in Africa faces both monumental challenges and unprecedented opportunities. Climate change, deforestation, and population pressure threaten ecosystems. Yet at the same time, awareness, technology, and youth engagement have never been higher.
